1-Methylcyclopropene delays tomato fruit ripening Horticultura Brasileira
Moretti,Celso Luiz; Araújo,Alessandra L.; Marouelli,Waldir Aparecido; Silva,Washington Luiz C..
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits, cv. Santa Clara, were harvested at the breaker stage from commercial fields in Brazlândia, Brazil, to investigate the ability of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to retard tomato fruit ripening. Fruit without external blemishes were graded for size (diameter = 80±5 mm) and mass (m = 130±10 g), placed inside hermetically sealed boxes, and 1-MCP was applied for 12 hours (T = 22±1°C; RH = 80-85%) at four different concentrations: 0 (control), 250, 500 and 1000 mL.L-1. Fruits were held at ambient conditions (T = 23±2°C; RH 80-85%) for 2 days and then stored inside a cold room (T = 20±1°C; RH = 85-95%). Every 3 days, during a 15-day period, fruits were analyzed for firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity,...

An approach for the evaluation of efficiency of onion packinghouse operations Horticultura Brasileira
Camelo,Andrés F.Lopes; Horvitz,Sandra; Gómez,Perla A..
The onion is a major export crop in Argentina and obtaining consistent quality is a matter of concern to remain competitive internationally. Grading is generally done according to Mercosur standards but quality assurance programs are necessary at the packinghouse level. The objective of this study was to develop a first approach for characterizing sorting and sizing efficiency. During the 1998 season five onion packinghouses located in the Valle Bonaerense del Río Colorado (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) were randomly selected. In all of them, variables measured were: sorting table width, bulb transport and rotation speed as well as number of bulbs/sorter/hour. Before and after sorting, samples of 100 bulbs of each size category were randomly taken and...

Belisário,Celso Martins; Soares,Antônio Gomes; Coneglian,Regina Celi Cavestré; Plácido,Geovana Rocha; Castro,Carlos Frederico de Souza; Rodrigues,Lamonier Antônio Nery.
ABSTRACT: Native fruits are economically important to small producers, and they are a important part of the diet of several communities. Therefore, postharvest studies of these fruits are essential. In addition, research involving their chemical composition can identify substances that add potential value to the fruits, especially from a nutritional and medicinal standpoint. This study characterized the fruits of the muricizeiro shrub (Byrsonima crassifolia, Malpighiaceae), which were harvested from native plants on private properties and stored for 16 days at a mean temperature of 12 °C. The fruits were evaluated during storage for: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ascorbic acid content, phenolics and carotenoids total,...

Characterization of starch from different non-traditional sources and its application as coating in ‘Palmer’ mango fruit Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Rodrigues,Antonio Augusto Marques; Santos,Luana Ferreira dos; Costa,Rayssa Ribeiro da; Félix,Débora Tamara; Nascimento,José Henrique Bernardino; Lima,Maria Auxiliadora Coêlho de.
ABSTRACT Yam, cassava, jackfruit seed and mango seed kernel have potential for the extraction and use as starch in the food industry of starch or for the formulation of biodegradable coatings. As a biodegradable coating, starch can be applied in fruits characterized by a fast maturation, such as mango, which requires technologies to increase its shelf life. The aim of this study was to characterize starch from four non-traditional sources and to evaluate their potential as coating for ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Starches used were extracted from cassava, mango seed kernel, jackfruit seed, and yam, and had their physical, optical, and chemical properties characterized for later use as coatings of ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Fruits were coated with 3% cassava starch,...

Silva,Ana Veruska Cruz da; Amorim,Julie Anne Espíndola; Vitória,Marina Ferreira da; Ledo,Ana da Silva; Rabbani,Allivia Rouse Carregosa.
ABSTRACT The state of Sergipe is the largest mangaba producer, which is a fruit native to Brazil, and has cultural, social and economic importance in its area of occurrence. It is an endangered species due to human actions, and despite its economic potential, there are still no commercial plantations. The study was carried out in order to characterize trees, fruits and the genetic diversity of natural populations of mangaba in Sergipe, Brazil. Fruits from Abaís Beach/Estância (AB) presented, on average, twice the vitamin C content (414.81 mg of vit. C/100g), when compared with the others. The use of ISSR primers was efficient in estimating the genetic similarity of populations. The primers clustered the populations of mangaba according to their origin,...

Comparison of color indexes for tomato ripening Horticultura Brasileira
López Camelo,Andrés F.; Gómez,Perla A..
Color in tomato is the most important external characteristic to assess ripeness and postharvest life, and is a major factor in the consumer's purchase decision. Degree of ripening is usually estimated by color charts. Colorimeters, on the other hand, express colors in numerical terms along the L*, a* and b* axes (from white to black, green to red and blue to yellow, respectively) within the CIELAB color sphere which are usually mathematically combined to calculate the color indexes. Color indexes and their relationship to the visual color classification of tomato fruits vine ripened were compared. L*, a* and b* data (175 observations from eleven cultivars) from visually classified fruits at harvest in six ripening stages according to the USDA were used to...
